Heading out on a camping adventure and not quite sure what to pack? If you’re new to the camping game, here’s a quick checklist of essential outdoor equipment to ensure you have all the basics. Whether you’re heading to a campsite or out into the hills, make your trip one to remember with these must-have items.

Get your camping right with this fundamental gear

1. BACKPACK

Unless you’re driving straight to the campsite, you’re going to need  a sturdy, comfortable rucksack to carry all the items below.

2. TENT

(including poles, pegs & potentially a ground mat if it’s likely to be damp or rainy). Choose one that is the right size for your party!

3. SLEEPING BAG

Essential to stay warm and cosy when the night-time temps drop. Down or synthetic. You can also find double versions for extra warmth and snuggles (or zip two together if they’re compatible).

4. SLEEPING MAT

This is usually either a roll-up foam mat or a blow-up version that offer a little extra comfort for a good night’s rest and most importantly, insulate against the cold ground underneath you.

5. COOKING STOVE & POT

for a tasty alfresco meal. Don’t forget matches or a lighter. If you’re going for a short trip and don’t fancy the hassle and weight, check out some easy home-prep camp meals to cook at home and pack before you go!

6. KITCHEWARE

Plates, cups, forks & knives are must-haves so you don’t end up drinking your coffee straight out of the pot or scooping pasta with your fingers…

7. ENOUGH FOOD & WATER

to keep you going on the trail. Camping is a lot less fun when you’re hungry or thirsty, and pitching a tent when you’re hangry can quickly lead to domestic disaster.

8. LIGHTING

Make sure you have a torch, head torch or lantern to find that extra sweater in the dead of night.

9. CLOTHES

that are appropriate for the weather you’re likely to encounter, including spares to change into if you get sweaty or rained on. Bring enough layers as there is nothing more miserable than being wet and cold out there.

10. BIN BAGS

A great, cheap hack to keep everything dry (perfect as a backpack liner!) and carry away waste so you leave no trace.

11. INSECT REPELLENT

Need we say more?

12. TOILET PAPER

No explanations required here either, but a spare roll saves the day when the wash block at the campsite has run out. If you’re wild camping, remember to always take your waste away with you and if there has to be a #2, scrupulously follow the golden rules of wild camping and pack a little shovel.

13. FIRST AID KIT & SUNSCREEN

to patch up any scrapes or blisters, and not boil to a crisp.

14. MOBILE PHONE & POWER BANK

In Case of Emergency, but also as a backup torch just in case.

15. EMERGENCY INFO

Make sure you have the numbers of the local emergency services and always let friends or family know where you’re going.

And always remember… no matter where you go and how much gear you pack, LEAVE NO TRACE.
